RIPPEY NEWS:

Holden Ray Ulrich, son of Matt and Megan Ulrich of rural Ogden, celebrated his 1st birthday in style with a “Golfing Partee” the Saturday following his Aug. 5 birthday.  The decorations and food served carried out the golfing theme including Holden’s birthday hat!  Attending Holden’s party was special guest great-grandma Molly Sarff from Sioux City.  Holden’s sister Evie, his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and several cousins were able to join the festivities.  The weather was wonderful so most of the activities were held outdoors.

Dale and Nancy Hanaman journeyed to Wisconsin with their daughter Sarah Pearson and grandchildren Steven, Elizabeth and Andrea for a family reunion at the home of their nephew Tim Taylor and his wife Tracy in Fond du Lac, WI. Benji and Sarah Pearson and family then returned to their home in Superior, WI, and Nancy and Dale returned home on Sunday after joining Sarah and family for breakfast.

Nancy and Dale Hanaman participated in a training workshop for the emergency response team program through the Iowa United Methodist Church at the Aurelia United Methodist Church. They will be a part of one of the teams to respond to natural disasters in Iowa and nearby states as needed. The leader for the workshop was Pastor Paul Evans, Garner, who formerly served the United Methodist Church in Ogden.

Bardoles’ 50th anniversary, a month long celebration! Roy and Phyllis Bardole and family spent the end of July until  Aug. 23 celebrating their 50th anniversary! The Bardoles tell the story:

The first part of the celebration was a trip to Washington D.C.  to see Roy’s “cut  out”  in the “Time and Navigation” exhibit in the Air and Space Museum. It is at the end of the exhibit showing how firemen, farmers, and students use GPS.

Pete, Yvette, Arthur, Avery, and Aden left July 25 to drive to Washington D.C.  They stopped in West Lafayette, IN, to visit and spend the night with Bill and Heidi Fornes and daughters Margaret and Jane.  The next morning they were off to Auburn, MI.  There they spent the afternoon with Jay and Ellen Bardole of Vincennes, IN, and Dan and Heather Hubert and daughters Amanda and Janelle of Beverly Hills, MI.  Sunday they headed towards Washington D.C., stopping for some sightseeing on the way.

Monday, July 28, Roy, Phyllis, Tim, Lori, Cassie, Schyler and Gabe Bardole and Lauren King flew to D.C.  We all met that evening at a rented house in Historic Washington D.C. area.   It was nice and fit all 13 people with sleeping arrangements!

Tuesday we all headed to the Metro and then the Air and Space Museum.  It was comical to watch people look at the “cut out” of Roy and then to him.  We spent quite a while there taking our own pictures and having his picture taken with others. In the afternoon we headed to the Metro again and traveled out to Arlington Cemetery. We spent the afternoon there at the changing of the guard, Kennedy’s grave and other points of interest.

Wednesday morning we headed again to the Mall.  This time we had an appointment with Peter Liebhold, a curator at the Museum of American History.  He talked with us two hours about the upcoming new exhibit on agriculture, in which some our items will be on display.  They have a picture of Roy’s mom hauling in beans and an old GPS unit of ours.  Liebhold has asked lots of questions about farming from 1920 – 1940.  With the help of Paul Bardole telling Roy what was done then, he has been able to give Liebhold information. That exhibit will open in another year.   We all looked through the Smithsonian, ate lunch, and then met back together. Everyone but Roy, Phyllis and Aden had tickets to go through the Holocaust Museum.  We took Aden through the Natural History Museum.  There weren’t as many dinosaurs as Aden would have liked, but they are “building” a new T-Rex!

That evening then as we caught our second  wind, we walked toward the Washington Monument, the Korean War Memorial, the World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial.  It was nearing dusk as we left there and began the LONG walk to the Metro and back to the house.  We had ordered pizza two nights, so this night we picked up Chinese on the way home.

Thursday we all started at the Library of Congress and then decided to split up.  Pete’s family went to some more museums and the White House.  Cassie, Lauren, and Gabe went to some art museums, the White House and then dropped Gabe off at the Spy Museum where he met up with Lori and they spent the afternoon there. Roy, Tim, Schyler, and Phyllis headed out on a long journey to the Air and Space Museum annex out by Dulles Airport that housed the Discovery Space Shuttle.  We were ” awestruck” by its size and decided the long trip was worth it.  We met back at Union Station and ate there before heading back to the house. Pete’s family got back before us and chose pizza again!

Friday morning we headed to the Metro, airport, and home.  Pete’s family started their long drive home. They arrived home later Saturday evening.  It was a wonderful trip and we all had a great time.  Our only regret was that Jason and family could not be there with us.  With three children ages 7, 3, and 4 months, it would have been brutal.

August 9, Jason, Allison, Levi, Kate, and Chase traveled to Iowa for the rest of the celebration.  Sunday the 10th most of us went to Spring Lake to help our aunt Avis Jantz celebrate her 95th birthday.  Then we came back to Roy’s and the family had a 50th anniversary cake for us. Mackinsey and Boe Druivenga also joined us.  Monday night before Jason and family left for home, we were able to have a picture of our whole family taken.  That included Lauren King of Adaza who is now engaged to Schyler.

August 23, Roy and Phyllis drove to Ames and back to Collegiate Methodist Church where they were married.  We spent the day together and it was a nice ending to a wonderful celebration.  We are so blessed to have a great family!  We are looking forward to many more anniversaries, but this one was indeed memorable.
